The United Nations Organization (UN) foresees that 1.4 billion of people will be living in slums in 2020 if we consider each country’s current taxes of growth. In Latin America and Caribbean, more than 134 million people live in inadequate conditions and Brazil concentrates the most of these settlements: 52.3 million people. Peru (14 million), Argentina (11 million) and Venezuela (9 million) are the next in worst conditions.

Under this rhythm of growth, UN-Habitat believes that 162 million people will be living in Latin America and Caribbean living in precarious conditions of housing in the year of 2020. Facing this situation, it’s necessary the creation of spaces where international governments, agencies, movements of base, non-government organizations, companies, universities and researchers can approach, debate and point out solutions concerning to the habitation problem, following the successful initiative from UN-Habitat that was helded in June 2006, in Canada (III World Urban Forum). There, participants from the five continents could socialize its advances and difficulties, besides arguing and pointing global strategies to stop the growth of precarious cities.

Therefore, the International Seminar "Social Production of Habitat - Strategies for Elimination of the Inadequate Housing in Latin America Context" aims to promote a time to discussions in regional scope in order to integrate, to share and to develop initiatives that can answer locally the question of the habitation problem and that has positive results in the indices related to decent housing and sustainable growth of the cities.
